they say about me

Since 1993, the professional photographic career of Boris Kurtovich (a.k.a. Boris Curto) has been characterised by an inordinate passion for producing photographic works centred on the human figure as a transitory form, constantly evolving and in relation to the micro-environment which surrounds it.

He is Parisian by adoption and often travels between Milan, Berlin, London, Amsterdam and New York.

The spectrum of Boris's artistic expression broadens thanks to the experimentation of classic technical means (medium format digital cameras, large format analog photography) with increasingly frequent repercussions in the field of creation and artistic experimentation.

Specializing in black and white photography, Boris is acclaimed for his most famous and recognized portraits. Currently the focus is on immersive artistic projects, which will result in the upcoming publication of three new photography books and which will be published and distributed by the Parisian publishing house "L'Absinthe".

Open to proposals for collaboration corresponding to his vision of photographic art, Boris actively contributes to the promotion of a multifaceted art that is not sterilely confined within the walls of his own studio.

After nearly 20 years of study in philosophy and cultural anthropology at Harvard and Princeton Universities, Boris Kurtovich earned his second doctorate in visual anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley in 2018. He currently teaches in the program doctorate from the Kunstakademie Berlin, a school of visual arts and cinema, affiliated with the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Freie Universität.

His current research project focuses on the figure of Perre-Louis Pierson and his artistic relationship with Virginia Oldoini Verasis (the Countess of Castiglione). His published work includes articles in Artforum, Art in America, Photo International, Life, People, Photographica.

Aware of the need to communicate Art through an international dimension, Boris Curto actively participates in various associative realities, including the UPP (France), the PPA (United States). Additionally, Boris serves as Director of Photography for ASC, furthering his commitment to the global photography and film community. He was recently called to join the Société Française de Photographie.

The Origins of A Name.

“There is a difference between Boris Curto and Boris Kurtovich! Of course there is. They often ask me why this habit... Some photographs are signed Kurtovich, others Curto. Anything but an artist's whim. Kurtovich is the surname of my ancestors, children of that land that is Dalmatia, and of that city that is ZaRA. At the end of the Second World War, forced to flee their own home, never to return, they had to hide their origins from their own motherland, Italy.
After decades of fighting against a false and opportunist system, I have managed to reclaim my roots. And now they can never take them away from me again.”

Parce mihi domine quia dalmata sum!
